Patient Safety Specialist RN(Job Id 8279)

Position Summary


(25%) Receives, reviews, and investigates as indicated, patient safety variance reports in an effort to improve the safety and quality of care within the organization and when applicable: Facilitates management of serious adverse events, acting as the facility spokesperson when appropriate, promoting apology and transparency, working with the healthcare providers involved and patient / family to foster communication, discussion, and resolution. Plans, directs, and leads root cause analysis (RCA) when indicated. Reports to regulatory agencies as appropriate (Patient Safety Organization, the Joint Commission, FDA, etc.). Works collaboratively with Claims Manager and Manager of Patient Safety to negotiate payment of expenses and loss as necessary in response to variances.

(25%) Provides resources and consultation to staff, physicians, and other professional employees throughout the system in area of medical / legal, patient safety, and regulatory agency writ issues. This may include but not limited to presentations/training to increase awareness of patient safety initiatives, ongoing education to leaders on how to perform reviews at a local level when applicable, serve as subject matter expert for policies, and leads safety assessments.

(25%) Safety Data - Analyzes data specific to severity and frequency of patient safety events as a means of prioritizing responses in a timely fashion. Communicates and or distributes findings to others in the organization (leaders, employees, committees, boards). Utilizes risk management system to generate meaningful reports for use with performance/process improvement and risk prevention.

(25%) Conducts clinical review of patient medical records to monitor quality of care, identify potential risk exposures, and identify root causes of errors.


Reports to the Manager of Patient Safety

Serves as a liaison for claims and legal counsel that may require case review and file development.

May function in role as lead or co-lead and or serve as subject matter experts for committees across the health system.

Works with leadership and staff to create policies and procedures that ensure safe care and minimize harm to the patient.

Assures compliance with the regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA), etc.

Responsible for maintaining lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors within the health system while maintaining a level of visibility.


Associate's Degree required. Bachelors Degree in Nursing or highrer preferred. Candidates that possess an Associate's degree in Nursing must also possess at least five (5) years work experience in a clinicial setting.

Safety/Risk certifications preferred
State of Michigan Registered Nurse Licensure required


Three to five (3-5) years of clinical experience.

Familiarity with variance reporting tools and processes and a working knowledge of key safety/regulatory organizations and accreditation standards in healthcare (TJC, IHI, etc )

Ability to monitor quality, take initiative to proactively reduce risk.

Problem-solving techniques / expertise, interpersonal and customer service skills, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to speak in a public forum.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
